Josy Kriemler is a Swiss designer and artist whose practice is rooted in material-led research and an investigation of form, structure and textile production.
During her master's studies at UAL, she turned to weaving for the first time with the aim of understanding how textiles are structurally made.
Horsehair Typology combines Jacquard weaving with the manual insertion of horsehair, a process in which every single pick was laid by hand. The Jacquard textiles translate the photographic typologies of Bernd and Hilla Becher into textile form: industrial structures systematically documented before they vanished, mirrored in a craft following the same path.
This body of work traces the lifecycle of a heritage craft: how it was once essential, how it became niche, and what knowledge it still carries. Horsehair holds a long history within British textile production. Josy sought to learn from that history and to find a new expression within it.
